About the Program
Dolly Parton launched the Imagination Library in 1995 in her home state of Tennessee with the dream of fostering a love of books among preschool children. The program mails an age-appropriate book every month directly to a child’s home, addressed in their name.
Today, the Imagination Library is a worldwide nonprofit that mails more than 2.5 million books each month to children across the United States and in five other countries. Since it began, the program has gifted over 250 million books to children around the world.
$16 is enough to provide 1 child with a year of books
Why It Matters
Children who are read to regularly are more likely to succeed in school.
Early access to books builds vocabulary, sparks imagination, and strengthens family bonds.
By age five, children in the program can build a personal library of up to 60 books.
“You can never get enough books into the hands of enough children.” — Dolly Parton
